Tiger Conservation in Bandhavgarh :
Tourism, Protected Areas & Local Communities
Tourism is mainstay of tiger reserves, bird & wildlife sanctuaries in India and elsewhere. Ironically to the hard boiled activists and to many this interconnectivity is less apparent. Earlier before being declared as protected areas such as these forests and wet lands were sort of free hold premises for local communities mostly tribal and unfortunately the exploiting mafia and traders.

After independence with increase in awareness and realization of dwindling resources there was an urgent need to conserve whatever was left. In case of biodiversity conservation keeping sensitive species and fragile ecosystem in mind there was an urgent need to vacate prime habitats from human intervention in any form including habitation. With creation of protected areas the human habitations inside parks and wildlife sanctuaries were subsequently relocated outside. This created lot of resentment among the communities relocated. The communities lost all access to the protected areas including the resources for sustenance.
But any how relocation was imperative considering the reducing habitat, sensitivity of many species to constant human intervention and dwindling natural resources.
The answer lay in compensation, which unfortunately got mired in controversy. The second best option that followed was opening up of tourism in protected areas. The infrastructure so created benefitted the locals including those relocated from within. Tourism generated lot of employment opportunities for the displaced and created venue for empowerment through development of skills. This source of income through tourism industry was a welcomed whole heartedly.Eco-Tourism initially an elite phenomenon in India soon found favorable ground amongst common people and the industry flourished. This resulted in according greater income potential for the local communities.
The resentment changed into a positive outlook towards the natural heritage. This was great step forward towards conserving natural resources and ecosystems as the locals play a critical role in protection and conservation.
Tourism thus bridged the gap between the industry, natural heritage and the administration with local communities. This augured a bright outlook for the future of protected areas. This is an ongoing step and the industry should first and always keep the benefit of local communities in mind in employment and profit sharing. Organizations like the Future Tiger Brigade play a positive role in this aspect. Lot of monetary benefits flow to the park administration, as well though eco tourism. These act as crucial funds for conserving and upkeep of the protected areas.

Tourism & Awareness

Our natural resources and wild animals are on brink of extinction. It is not only human greed that is responsible for this contingency; the lack of awareness of our ecosystems and their inhabitants is vastly responsible as well. The myths and ignorance plays a deprecating role in extinction of species and dwindling of natural resources. Apex animals like tigers' leopards and wolves were declared as vermin and shot more especially during the British Raj and early post independence scenario.
The lack of understanding of the ecosystem concept, food chain and the crucial role of the floral and faunal element lead to rampant destruction of forest and other habitats in India. Ignorance also played a role in creating a wide gap between nature and humans and our failure to understand our own survival on all phenomenon's natural.Tourism has since then created a lot of understanding on interconnectivity between life forms, habitats and the fragile ecosystems. It has created a greater awareness among tourists of importance of floral and faunal elements in ecosystem to mankind.
Tiger are no longer seen as vermin nor the leopard and wolves, albeit the latter is still not tolerated near urban settlements.Tourism has brought about a change in mind set of the people and instilled a positive voice and outlook. Organizations like the Future Tiger Brigade play an active role in education potential of tourism by conducting nature trails, conservation workshop, field trips and lectures by eminent conservationists for the young kids and tourists alike.
